You don’t need to do a detox diet in January!

BUT

‘ A detox diet makes you healthier, and I have more energy’

Well it stops you from eating rubbish in the first place, so course you’re going to have more energy, as you’ve most likely just started to eat more fruit and veg than ever before! Plus if you’re consuming more liquid calories, your body will use less energy for digestion, so again of course you’re going to have more energy! Believe it not, your body uses energy to digest food!

NO FOOD/SUPPLEMENT will detox you!

detox diet

  1. A juice cleanse just leaves you tired and hungry, and just costs you a lot of money. Then all you’re left with is low energy, mood swings, and cravings!

  2. Activated charcoal – claims to bind to toxins within the body, again there is very little evidence for this.

  3. Lemon water does not wake up your liver. If your liver slept you would be dead.

Your liver and kidneys are perfectly capable of cleansing your body. There is no known way, certainly not through detox treatments to make something that works perfectly well in a healthy body work better. You can go on a 7 day detox diet, and you’ll most likely loose weight, but that’s nothing to do with toxins! Most of the weight you loose at the start is water weight as well. Basically you’ve starved yourself for a week, so of course you’re going to loose weight. You’ll soon find once returning to a normal eating regime, you’ll regain the weight you’ve lost!

Cruciferous vegetables contain cyanide. Eating it primes the enzymes in your liver to deal better with any other poisons. So if you want to support your detoxification system eat some broccoli and Brussels sprouts instead, which will cost you a lot less than expensive detox juices/supplements! Also every time you go to the toilet that’s simply a detox! So essentially you need to ensure your digestive system is functioning well, and we can do this by drinking plenty of water, eating a diet rich in fibre, less stress, as stress can affect motility in the bowel, exercise, but nothing too intense, and gut derived yoga flow!

There is a lot of money in the detox industry, and lots of people who are marketing these products are making a lot of money!

If someone talks about a food detoxing you, this is a clear sign that they do not understand human physiology.

So how can you support your own detoxification system:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • cruciferous vegetables

  • Varied diet

  • Fibre – to move your bowls ( I like to take at least a tbsp of psyllium husk in the mornings with water)

  • reduce alcohol intake

  • Light exercise and nothing too excessive
